What this covers. Every trade, but it isn't only storefronts: many holders work from home or from a van. “New” is our reading of the year in the license number, which we tested but the state doesn't define. There's no forward date.

Monday morning

That Gacha Girl just landed on the Kent County list.

Shop & retail in Clayton. Status: new business license. A new place needs a POS, insurance, signs, supplies and staff. If you sell any of that, this is the name you want on your desk on Monday, with the week still ahead of you.

That’s a real row from Delaware Division of Revenue business licenses, not a sample. The free email gives you the names. Pro gives you the address and more.

How it works

The paperwork shows up first

A new business leaves a public paper trail. That trail is how we see openings coming.

Step 1

The record gets published

Delaware's Division of Revenue publishes the state's business licenses, for retail, restaurants, contractors and services alike.

Step 2

We read and sort it

The state doesn't mark a license as new. License numbers start with a year, so we treat this year's numbers as new. We tested that on long-running firms, and they carry old years, but it's our reading and not a state definition.

Step 3

You see it, with its limits

We leave out out-of-state addresses, trade-name-only registrations, movers, sales reps and non-resident contractors. Dates fall on the first of a month more often than not, so we show when a row first appeared in the file.
